THE FARMER’S DAUGHTER DYNAMIC: Harriet Cowan Reveals the “Father Figure” Behind the Diddly Squat Legend

To the world, he is the bombastic, car-crunching provocateur of Top Gear and The Grand Tour. But to Harriet Cowan, the 25-year-old breakout star of Clarkson’s Farm Series 4, Jeremy Clarkson is something far more surprising: a “father figure” who is genuinely eager to learn the ropes of a trade that has humbled him for years.

Cowan, a former full-time nurse who swapped scrubs for wellies, spent 11 weeks living in a caravan on the 1,000-acre Diddly Squat estate. Stepping in to deputize for fan-favorite Kaleb Cooper, she quickly became a standout personality, charming audiences with her encyclopedic farming knowledge and a sharp wit that frequently left the 66-year-old presenter speechless.

“Like Every Other Farmer”

Speaking on the Fed By Farmers podcast, Cowan pulled back the curtain on Clarkson’s off-camera persona. Despite his reputation for polarized public opinion—which Harriet likens to “Marmite”—she insists the man behind the headlines is remarkably grounded.

“He was like a father figure when I was there. He was lovely,” Cowan revealed. Addressing the public’s love-hate relationship with the presenter, she added: “Off the back of the show people would always be like, ‘Oh I hate that guy,’ or ‘I love that guy,’ and I think he just doesn’t care, which is great.”

Perhaps most shockingly for those who know Clarkson as a high-octane rebel, Cowan characterizes him as “very much like every other farmer I’ve ever met.” Beyond the cameras, she claims he possesses a genuine desire to “do well by the farm” and—in a playful jab at his appearance—quipped that he even has the “physique of a farmer.”

From Nursing to New Horizons

Harriet’s journey to Diddly Squat was as unconventional as Clarkson’s own. Approached by land agent Charlie Ireland (famously known as “Cheerful Charlie”), Harriet admits she wasn’t actually a fan of Clarkson’s earlier work. “I wasn’t really into the cars thing,” she confessed.

However, the 11-week residency in Oxfordshire has permanently shifted her career trajectory. Now focusing on farming and content creation, Harriet harbors dreams of owning her own operation alongside her partner, James Booth. Her goal is simple yet profound: to raise cattle and be able to say, “I’ve done that.”

What’s Next for Diddly Squat?

While Harriet stopped short of confirming her return for the upcoming fifth season, her impact on the series is undeniable. She represents a new generation of agricultural workers—knowledgeable, media-savvy, and unafraid to put a multi-millionaire in his place when he fails to hitch a trailer correctly.

As for Clarkson, the transition from Curdle Hill Farm to the global phenomenon of Diddly Squat continues to be a journey of humility. With Harriet’s endorsement, it appears the “King of the Cotswolds” is finally earning his stripes among the people who know the land best.
