Marty and Rick Lagina Share Emotional Pride in Alex’s “Unstoppable” Drive During Recovery
In the quiet, wood-paneled confines of the “War Room” on Oak Island, the atmosphere is usually one of intense data analysis and strategic planning. However, this week, the tone shifted from archaeology to family as Marty and Rick Lagina sat down to share a deeply personal update. Speaking with a mix of fatherly concern and profound professional respect, the brothers addressed the ongoing recovery of Alex Lagina, revealing the extraordinary lengths he has gone to stay involved in the search despite his recent physical setbacks.
The year 2025 was undeniably the most difficult in Alex’s decade-long tenure with the fellowship. Following a severe industrial accident in Michigan and a subsequent physical collapse while trekking the Templar Trail in Europe, the younger Lagina has been under strict medical orders to remain sidelined. But as Marty and Rick revealed, you can take a Lagina out of the field, but you cannot take the search out of a Lagina.
“He Refuses to Be a Spectator”
Marty Lagina, usually the pragmatist of the duo, was visibly moved when discussing his son’s recent behavior. While Alex is currently undergoing daily physical therapy to recover from systemic exhaustion and lingering concussion symptoms, he has transformed his recovery room into a remote command center.
“I told him to turn off the computer and sleep,” Marty shared with a weary smile. “But that’s not how Alex is built. Last week, I walked into his room at 2:00 AM, and the glow of three monitors was lighting up the walls. He was cross-referencing new Lidar data from the Money Pit with 17th-century French naval charts. He was in pain, he was tired, but he was working. As a father, you worry, but as a partner in this search, you can’t help but be incredibly proud of that kind of grit.”
Marty emphasized that while Alex’s body is healing, his mind remains one of the sharpest assets the team possesses. “He’s found things in the data while lying in bed that we missed while standing on the ground,” Marty added.
The Bridge to the Future
For Rick Lagina, Alex’s dedication represents more than just hard work—it represents the survival of the “Fellowship.” Rick has long viewed Alex as the critical link between the founding generation of the modern search and the future of Oak Island.

“We talk a lot about the ‘Once in, always in’ mantra,” Rick said, his voice steady but filled with emotion. “Alex has embodied that more than anyone this year. He felt he let us down when he collapsed in France, which is nonsense, of course. But his response to that setback has been to work twice as hard from his desk. He’s coordinating with the labs in Salt Lake City, he’s talking to the theorists, and he’s keeping the spirit of the team alive even when he can’t be there to pull the bucket.”
Rick noted that Alex’s resilience has become a rallying cry for the rest of the crew. “When the guys on the island see the reports Alex is sending through at all hours, despite everything he’s been through, it pushes them to dig a little deeper. He is the heart of this operation right now.”
A New Role for 2026
While the brothers are bursting with pride, they were also firm about the immediate future. Alex will not be allowed back into heavy field operations until he is cleared by a full panel of specialists—a move Marty calls “the toughest executive decision I’ve ever made.”
Instead, for the first half of the 2026 season, Alex will transition into a lead Digital Strategist role. By utilizing his background in engineering and his deep knowledge of the island’s history, he will oversee the fellowship’s data-driven approach from a specialized facility in Traverse City before returning to Nova Scotia late in the summer.
“The recovery is a marathon, not a sprint,” Marty concluded. “But if I’ve learned anything this month, it’s that Alex has more heart than I ever realized. He’s proven that he’s not just ‘Marty’s son’ or ‘Rick’s nephew.’ He is a leader in his own right.”
A Message to the Fans

The Lagina brothers ended their update by thanking the fans for the thousands of letters and “get well” messages that have arrived at the Oak Island Post Office. According to Rick, these messages have been “the best medicine” for Alex, fueling his desire to get back to the island he loves.
As the snow begins to settle over the Money Pit, the message from the War Room is clear: The search continues, and with Alex Lagina’s spirit leading the way, the fellowship has never been stronger.
