Jeremy Clarkson admits opening up a pub “messed my heart up” as he issued a worrying health update.

The former Top Gear host took over The Farmer’s Dog pub in Asthall, near Burford in Oxfordshire last summer. He operates the venue alongside his Diddly Squat Farm in nearby Chipping Norton.

The farm is the focal point of Prime Video’s popular series, Clarkson’s Farm. While viewers have seen 65-year-old Jeremy’s trials and triumphs on the farm, he concedes they are nothing compared to the challenges of running a pub.

Jeremy reveals that the 14th-century boozer had no gas and only a “dribble of electricity” when he took over. Even worse, the TV presenter admits there was “virtually no water at all”.

It was hoped that Jeremy would have the venue open in time for the August bank holiday. However, this meant balancing work at the pub with the harvest at Diddly Squat, where Jeremy cultivates barley, rapeseed and wheat, reports Gloucestershire Live.

In an interview with The Sun’s TV magazine, Jeremy says he found himself working almost every hour of the day. He said: “I was working 20 hours, 24 hours sometimes – literally round the clock.

“I like hard work. If I don’t do something constructive in a day, I can’t really get to sleep that night. But that was silly, and it did actually mess my heart up. It’s very stressful running a pub, it’s more stressful than running a farm.”

Last year, former Grand Tour star Jeremy underwent emergency surgery after experiencing symptoms consistent with a heart attack. The symptoms first appeared while Jeremy was on holiday and worsened upon his return home.

He disclosed that he began to struggle with tasks such as climbing the stairs. When he started feeling tingling in his left arm, clamminess, and “tightness” in his chest, he decided to seek medical help.

Although medics ruled out a heart attack, the star had a stent fitted after being told his artery was completely blocked. Jeremy revealed he has since had to modify his diet and lifestyle.

Writing in The Sun last year, he said: “Literally, I am not allowed to have fun any more. If I go to a party, I must stand in a corner, nursing some refreshing elderflower juice, before going home at about 9.30. That’s terrifying.”

In October, Jeremy said he had to cut out “everything I like eating”. This, he said, included “bacon, sausages, beef, lamb, pork, butter, chips, proper milk, Cadbury’s fruit and nut bars and the interesting bit in an egg”.

In an interview with Best magazine, Jeremy shared insights into his new routine: “My phone flashed up this morning, and it read, you are taking far fewer steps this week than last. It also said, you are eating far fewer sausages. I now eat celery, and I feel better for it.”
